Until recently it was de rigueur to belch loudly after a meal to show your appreciation: this, too, was part of identifying with the masses in terms of social behavior. The Chinese who have had contact with Westerners have noticed that this does not go over well with their guests, and have abandoned the practice.

Among the poorer people, spitting and very loud throat clearing, caused in the north by the dust from the Gobi Desert, and all over China by far too much smoking, is a widespread and unpleasant habit that you just have to learn to put up with. There have been numerous public health campaigns against it, with limited success. Nevertheless, if you have a cold and need to blow your nose, try to go outside the room—it is considered disgusting by many Chinese to do this in front of other people.

You should also make sure that you cover up bare feet in the summer (socks worn with sandals may be uncool in the West but they are a must in China), and dress modestly and conventionally.
